BAJA FLIGHT LOG - 1999

Sunday, February 14, 1999. We arrived on launch at approximately 10:15 to find soarable conditions. Big John King and his son, Little John, were the first to launch. Bill Burzenski and Fred Leonard followed the Kings into the air. Big John had his first soaring flight. Little John scored his first top landing. Everyone got over an hour in the air before conditions intensified and everyone top landed.

Monday, February 15, 1999. was a carbon copy of Sunday. We arrived on launch at 10:30 and found soarable conditions again. Big John was able to cross the gap to the southern ridge. Bill had to top land early because he was unable to shake a kink out of his brake lines. Everyone else got in over an hour and a half soaring the ridge before it got blown out.

Tuesday, February 16, 1999. The Kings had to depart early due to the death of a close friend. They missed a great day, unfortunately. Light westerlies prevailed all day, under partly cloudy skies. Bill got over three hours in the air. Fred got over 2 ½ hours of soaring. Brent joined us and got over three hours of air time before landing out at the Baja Seasons. Conditions were soarable for over six hours until sunset.

Wednesday, February 17, 1999. Fairly strong northwest conditions prevailed throughout the day. Fred got a 40 minute flight in before it got too rowdy. Bill elected to remain earthbound.

Thursday, February 18, 1999. A marine layer came in overnight and shrouded the ridge in clouds most of the day. Although the wind was on shore, we stayed at the villa and watched videos.

Friday, February 19, 1999. Fred got a flight of an hour and forty minutes. Ruth got forty minutes of soaring in and Bill soared for about half an hour in the morning. It got blown out in the mid day and Fred and Ruth got flights in late in the day when the winds subsided.

Saturday, February 20, 1999. Five of our beginners arrived Friday evening and headed to the sand dunes at Cantamar for a light on shore breeze. We arrived at launch at 10:15. Fred and Bill launched and soared over the ridge for 40 minutes before the clouds lowered to ridge level forcing them to fly out and land. I drove Fred to the airport in the afternoon.

Sunday, February 21, 1999. It was blown out on the ridge most of the day. Our beginners did inflations in very strong conditions on the beach. We viewed video tapes on reserve parachutes in the mid-day and returned to the dunes at Cantamar late in the day when the winds subsided. Bill got a soaring flight in on the ridge in lighter winds just before dusk.

Monday, February 22, 1999. Three of our beginners advanced to the ridge at La Salina where they got their first high flights in light conditions.

Tuesday, February 23, 1999. Our three more advanced beginners flew the ridge while the other three flew the dunes at Cantamar.

Wednesday, February 24, 1999. One of our beginners, Chip, flew the ridge in lighter conditions in the morning and evening. Dennis and Diane got their first soaring flights in at the Dune. Bill also soared the ridge. Baja Brent, our host at the B&B soared the ridge for over three hours.

Thursday, February 25, 1999. It was blown out on the ridge by 10 a.m. so we went to Torrey Pines for Dennis and Diane to look at harnesses and went to Black Mountain where Chip, Dennis, Diane, Bill and Ruth all got soaring flights in some very buoyant air that arrived at about 4 p.m.

Friday, February 26, 1999. Chip finished the week with a soaring flight over an hour in duration at La Salina Ridge. Dennis and Diane were unable to get their gliders launched, but Bill and Ruth got soaring flights in as well before it got too strong in the mid day.

Over the two weeks we were in the Baja, we flew every day except one. We had no rain and many of our students got their first soaring experiences in.
